The most annoying deadly enemy I find on this floor is a frost beetle-I'm immune to cold, but I can also ignore him anyway because he can't hear me while he's sleeping. I've also been lucky enough to dig up several more gems and now, despite the purchases, have saved up 2,000 gold (quite a lot, some games I find almost nothing). Now I just carry around my longsword because I'm still perfectly silent with it equipped. There are still dangers, mind you, but this is a pretty interesting way to explore the game. No sleeping monster (most in the game) can hear me now, even when I walk right by them. I find an armorer who upgrades my already amazing shield to a "spectre" ice shield of cold resistance, which gives a completely unexpected -3 to noise. I also find an alchemist whom I pay to convert some ingredients into a greater healing potion. Another option is the light bow and some arrows of force (made easier to use by the headband: +missile, +range). It's fun, and definitely not as overpowered as that might sound.) I wouldn't normally keep the longsword equipped because it does make some noise.

(Swapping gear is a free action in TGGW, so you can do this as much as you like before dealing with a new situation. If I really need to fight I can equip the longsword I just found, which is great because they do 2 damage instead of 1 and bestow a high block value, and also swap in a ring of peace (+block, +armor) and green tunic (+melee).

Now only monsters within two spaces will even notice me.

The RNG gods are in a really good mood, because the first body equipment I find is a velvet robe: -2 noise! Current noise: 2. Here the most important find is my first enchanted item, an ice shield of cold resistance which gives a whopping 125% resistance against cold in addition to the extra block value. That will come in handy if we come across any of the many kinds of NPCs offering goods and services. 1000 gold! The most valuable gem in the game. Shortly after finding the pickaxe I dig a diamond out of a wall.

You occasionally come across walls that can be dug into to find rocks, special types of rocks, or gems. So far no serious enemy encounters-like I said, the game is not too difficult for the first few floors.Īnother important find on this level: a pickaxe. I've played TGGW quite a few times before, and this is already the lowest noise level I've ever reached. So I am happy that here I already have yet another piece of my stealth gear, the light boots of skill: -1 noise (the "of skill" modifier in this case gives me the closed melee attribute, which enhances my fighting skill in enclosed spaces). The first 4-5 floors are where you really need to fully explore everything and build up your inventory/gear, because you're relatively safe from death on these levels.

That plus lots of amazing luck ended up as quite a unique run.Īs if the RNG is reading my mind, it only takes a few tries before, on the very first floor, I already find TWO rings of stealth. So with this goal in mind I quickly started and restarted several games just to play the first floor or two to wait for at least a start on this gear/direction. It's understandable why I like this game )) (In this way it's quite like my own roguelike, Cogmind, though even more extreme in some regards. That said, as a disclaimer I should first mention that with TGGW in particular it can be very difficult to intend to build a certain character, because there is no race/class to choose and you are completely reliant on the RNG for items. Using heavy armor and weapons will generally cause you to be noisy and attract everything in sight (and even those behind doors and around corners, etc.), while special clothing, boots, rings and more can reduce your noise even stacking to the point that you're completely silent. Many different kinds of items affect your noise level. TGGW ( The Ground Gives Way) has pretty fun and transparent stealth mechanics, assigning you a "noise" level that directly determines the range within which sleeping enemies will wake up and attack you (most enemies are found sleeping). This is the story of my most recent victory, achieved via stealth-focused character.
